A Silent Rebellion Against Dogmatism

Women where the more to lose when the ayatollahs took power in Iran, wrestling it from the more progressive sectors of the iranian society, who promptly saw their dreams of freedom replaced by an authoritarian, reactionary regime even worse than the westernized Shah and his unabashed dependency on the dictates of Britain and the US. Delijani shows us a claustrophobic world where fear, injustice and sacrifice dominate every life. And it also shows the silent resistance, the indomitable will of human spirit prevailing against the hell on Earth brought upon their land by the dogmatists of Islam.One beautiful moment in the book summarizes its homage of human valor: Leila walks the streets of Teheran with her lipstick on, her silent rebellion against the "Brothers", when a patrol car stops in front of her because her hair is showing under her dress. She quickly cleans her mouth determined to survive despite the carnage of human idiocy around her.
