Glyn Iliffe studied English and Classics at Reading University, England, where he developed his passion for the stories of ancient Greek mythology. Well travelled, Glyn has visited nearly forty countries, trekked in the Himalayas, spent six weeks hitchhiking across North America and had his collarbone broken by a bull in Pamplona. He is married with two daughters and lives in Leicestershire. He is currently working on the sixth and concluding book in his Adventures of Odysseus series.

Fantastic!!!

Having devoured the previous books in the series—King of Ithaca, the Gates of Troy, the Armour of Achilles, and the Oracles of Troy—I couldn’t wait for this, the latest instalment, to reach us. I have always been enchanted by the myths and legends of ancient Greece, the Odyssey in particular, and it has been beautifully retold here. Glyn Iliffe continues the story, brilliantly leading us from the aftermath of the siege of Troy into Odysseus’s fateful journey home to his beloved Ithaca, and he captures all that I love about the story… the exciting battles, the heartache of a home just out of reach, the romance, the monsters.The problem now is that I have to wait for the next instalment :(

Like Homer’s original, Glyn Iliffe’s series is destined to become a classic!

“From one adventure to another the pace never lets up. Like Homer’s original, Glyn Iliffe’s series is destined to become a classic!”

That’s the strapline I gave to Glyn Iliffe for the cover of this book and I think it about sums it up. The Trojan War is over and it’s time – at last! – for Odysseus and his men to go home. Back to the wife and child he hasn’t seen for a decade. But it’s not going to be that easy is it?

Anyone who’s ever read the Odyssey will know there’s still a lot of story to be told and Glyn uses this book to do so. Gone are the schemes and plots to get inside Troy and, in their place are fantastic islands populated by bizarre monsters like the Cyclops. Truly this is a tale of magic and adventure!

And yet, the characters Glyn has created are – here more than ever before – portrayed as REAL people, with real flaws and emotions. They attack an innocent village, for example, purely so Odysseus can gather some more plunder (wealth and slaves) to take back from the long war. This is how it was back then and the author doesn’t shy away from it – it’s just a part of life, but it really shows us the type of hard men we’re dealing with and it’s a great counterpoint to all the fantasy that permeates the story.

The battle scenes are excellent – vivid, exciting and brutal, while the pacing of the tale is just about perfect, drawing the reader in from the very start and not letting go until the end. And it’s a long book so you’re really getting your money’s worth here, as Odysseus and his side-kick Eperitus lurch from one horrible situation to another, even visiting Hades along the way.

Glyn Iliffe has been lucky in a way with this series because much of the tale has been written for him, so he “just” has to flesh it out in his own style. BUT that can also be a curse and I think the end of this particular book shows that. If you know the story of Odysseus from Homer’s original you will know his voyage home is not an easy one – far from it. And as a result this novel is very dark, with a lot of death and sadness and I did feel it started to become rather oppressive just as it neared the end.

But things finish on a hopeful note and the next book is set up perfectly!

Glyn is now self-published and I think this new novel really proves his mettle as a writer. Given his original books had the benefit of major in-house editors, cover designers etc I can say this, and his previous self-published book The Oracles of Troy, stand alongside them and, in fact, are probably BETTER.

The Voyage of Odysseus should be out NOW – I hope you pick up a copy, but DO start at the beginning if you haven’t read the previous books. They’re ALL excellent.

This is the fifth book in the Adventures of Odysseus series including King of Ithaca, The Gates of Troy, The Armor of Achilles, and Oracles of Troy .
The author retells the life of Odysseus not only based on the myths but by also adding new characters such as Eperitus the Captain of the Guard, thereby giving a new and refreshing take on the story of Odysseus . These books have adventure, epic battles, and romance while also staying true to the classical myths. If you like Gemmell's Troy series, you will also like these books!

The Core of Jungian Psychology

What makes this book especially valuable is the fact that it was written shortly after Jung's death, by one of his closest collaborator. Jolande Jacobi had already published a book on the psychology of Carl Jung prior to this one, but "The Way of Individuation" deals specifically with the process of individuation, which is central to Jung's thinking. While discussing the key concept of individuation Jacobi also explains all the basics of Jungian psychology. This makes it a great introduction to Carl Jung.

The back cover says that "The Way of Individuation" was written to make the core of Jungian thought accessible to the general reader. It is an essential interpretation for all who seek to understand Jung's vision of the path that human beings must follow to attain full selfhood." This is a perfect summary of what this little book of 150 pages is all about. It has been written in a very accessible language, except that it is a translation from the German. So it might be a bit less fluid than one would wish. But it's the same problem with many books on Jungian psychology that were originally written in German.

What I found particularly interesting was the short biography of the author at the end of the book. Jolande Jacobi was an important figure in Jung's entourage but she remains an obscure figure today. Most fortunately the last chapter of the book offers a fine summary of her life and explains the role she played in popularizing Jung's psychology. We also learn that the extraordinary dream that was presented anonymously in the middle of the book was actually the author's own dream which she had made about six months after meeting Carl Jung for the first time when she invited him to give a conference in Vienna. After the conference she gave a reception at her house and Jung used the opportunity to introduce her to the I Ching, which made a great impression on Jacobi.

Even if you are already familiar with Jungian psychology I believe this little gem offers a unique contribution that gives immediate access to the core of his teachings. It is certainly overdue for a reedition, and there are no substitutes for it.

Loved it!

This is the perfect short read to take with you as you travel for the holidays or when you are sitting in front of a fire relaxing. It is short but sweet with a side of sexy. This story introduces us to Treasure and Brodie who work together and get along great. There is definitely chemistry there, but neither have ever acted on it before. Throw in a cabin in the mountains, some sexy chick flicks, and their undeniable chemistry and this read will keep you warm on a cold winter's night. I look forward to this series and finding out about both Brodie's and Treasure's pasts. Exciting introduction to the series!

Fast paced and fun to read

I'll admit that I was already a fan of Jody Kessler's YA series when I read this story. She writes strong characters with complicated emotional baggage, and does it in a way that's still light and lyrical.

A snowy Christmas Eve in a remote cabin leads to hot romance. Loved the characters, loved the setting, loved the sizzling scenes between them. This short story delivers a satisfying HEA on its own, but also leaves enough possibilities open that I can't wait to read more about Treasure and what might come next for her. Great job, Ms. Kessler!

It felt good the first time --and still good for the firstimer

There is nothing detailed or even intellectually satisfying in this book. But I think the one thing that it does do is, (as another reviewer put it,) is to cheerlead. This book was exciting as it was the first book that I had ready on the subject. But now that I have done numerous transactions in real estate and handled millions of dollars worth of real estate and having experienced the ups and downs, DON"T DO REAL ESTATE AFTER READING THIS BOOK!!!!!!!! This book is so simplistic one does not know where to begin. For instance, Mr. Dolf, doesn't delve into possible set-backs seriously enough. He assumes that as long as you buy in a densely populated area, it is a safe bet. And he gives an example of "California" as one such place. There are many contingencies too numerous to list that destroys such a simplistic theory. Markets do have their time and in real estate, if you are stuck in a loan and a property you can't move, you are illiquid and repositioning is not as easy as it might seem. Therefore, being incapable of averting financial ruin is mmore difficult.

Real Estate is something that is experienced. You can't just "buy by the beach" and then just earn equity growth because no one is making beach front. And how many people have the kind of money that allows their first deal to be a fixer in Malibu. His other formula to look at a hundred-pick three-and buy one is really idiotic. There are no formulas in a mechanism that is continually shifting. The real estate industry is continually evolving. There is always an element of risk involved in any purchase. And buying single family homes is a mistake unless you are in a rapidly appreciating environment simply because there is less income potential to hold notes. And the more units, the better the rate (commercial properties). Also, the diversity of loan products just about allows anyone to buy their own home--no need to rent. None of this is even mentioned in these pages.

Then why three stars? Because, fundamentally getting excited is half the battle. And this book WAS exciting. Its simplicity is actually very appealing. In essence, he is right about one thing: Real estate is about debt acquisition ultimately. The SELECTION of the type and structure of debt and the INSTRUMENT against which a deed of trust is written is all-important. But Dolf miserably fails on these issues.There is a tremendous lack of serious dialogue and this book is simply an attempt to sell less than a mediocre work to a less than average society. For God's sake--HE TELLS YOU ABOUT THIS ONE HOUSE SOMEWHERE AND HE PAINTED IT AND LIKE MADE $20,000!! WOWIE!! $20k! You can buy gas for six whole months. Truth is, REAL ESTATE IS MORE COMPLICATED than one would ever assume. If you want something simple....buy an Index fund.

If you want to raise your I.Q. read another book. If you want to understand the simplest of simple items in real estate and get excited, read this book as a starter. But promise yourself you will wait before you jump into a ridiculous formula of see 100:make offers on three and buy one by the beach you cant afford!

Excellent advice for beginners

This book was excellent. I am a "beginner" real estate investor at best (I just purchased my first rental home) and this book was EXACTLY what I needed. Dolf's advice was to the point and inspiring. If I had to pick at something it would be his references to his webpage where you can purchase some of his software and other books. But then again, I would probably do the same.

If you still have doubts on why real estate is the best place to invest your money then you need to read this book!

Excellent Real Estate Book by someone who knows.......

I have to admit that I am a fan of the Rich Dad series of books. I also have to admit that Dolf de Roos was not initially my favorite author in the advisor series. When I came across the first edition of this book, I thought it was slim and the weakest of the series.

Then I bought Dolf de Roos Real Estate College Program at Costco which includes a audio version of this book. I was impressed both by Dolf de Roos knowledge and ability to explain complicated real estate terminology in easy layman terms. He made learning easy and fun.

I went out and bought the revised version of this book and love it. Having the printed version makes looking up information easy. I play the cd's in my car to reinvorce the material.

Also recommend The ABC's of Real Estate Investing by another Rich Dad advisor Ken McElroy and Nothing Down 2000's by Robert Allen.

The novelist (The Angle Quickest for Flight) and journalist travels to Mexico, where he hears a story about a magical being called "the Conductor," who controls the surf. Having heard the same tale eight years earlier while surfing in Indonesia, Kotler decides to seek out the legend's source while researching the inherent mysticism of surfers and their sport. Detailing his journey and findings, Kotler creates a work that combines the most compelling elements of memoir, travelogue and scholarly abstract into an accessible tale of physical and mental adventure. Up for anything, Kotler seeks out big waves, bungee jumping and a risky helicopter ride. He also delves into far-flung topics: surfing's history, Joseph Campbell's work on myths, Jungian psychology, Zen Buddhism, government "weather modification" experiments and the religious beliefs of islanders like the Maori and Hawaiians. A Five Star Wave of a Book

Two friends who happened to be surfers drove their rusted out old car into the outback to chase the rumor of perfect waves on an isolated beach. They rumbled over the bumpy road, turning left, then right, winding around, finally driving off the pavement down pockmarked, dusty lanes, eventually stalling out in a thick muck field just a quarter mile from the ocean. From here they did what any reasonable surfer would do, they untied their boards and started to hike into the beach. Things changed not more than ten feet away from their abandoned car. A blinding light flash and -zap!- a lightning bold charred the car, frying engine and all associated parts.

Miles from civilization, knowing nothing about engines and out of supplies, they did the only sensible thing--they went surfing. When they reached the water they found the surface to be completely flat, no waves to be had. Waiting out most of the afternoon with no change in conditions, they were ready to bail, when again -zap!- another bolt hit the reef and *poof* instant waves. Beautiful surf for hours, they caught waves all day, until suddenly, just as rapidly as they had begun, the waves shut off. Just like that, as sometimes happens.

That's when they saw him. Several hundred yards out was an old man sitting on a surfboard. In his hand was a long white bone. The story is that with this bone he could control the weather, could summon waves, and who knows what other magical stuff.

This is the story of the Conductor. It is the myth who's elusive origins author Steven Kotler seeks in his book "West of Jesus: Surfing, Science, and the Origins of Belief." After hearing the tale of the Conductor years apart in similarly dire circumstances while surfing in Indonesia and later Mexico, Kotler embarks on a journey of the exploration of belief and spirituality. The "logos and "mythos" of human understanding. This is not your average surf book.

Weaving his own personal tale of a struggle with Lyme's Disease and his transformation through a surfing session, he gives us a peepshow look at current scientific thought about the causal reasons behind our spiritual experiences. This is a magical narrative that touches on areas that those of us who explore recognize as familiar. It is a complex, yet simple tale that uses surfing simply as a backdrop, but has relevance to anyone, especially those in love with action sports. Social scientists, psychologists, evolutionary biologists, and many other scientific sorts weigh in on numerous aspects of belief. We are ushered to all corners of the globe, from California to New Zealand to Hawaii on this quest.

Much is revealed. On the marriage of brain evolution and the construction of mythologies:

"Humans often encounter illness, death, odd coincidences, mysterious circumstances--things that do not allow for easy understanding. Yet human evolution designed the human brain to detect meaning, and this mechanism doesn't just shut down when easy answers aren't readily forthcoming. Hence the need to invent meaning--gods, demons, supernatural forces--mythos is how humankind resolves the irresolvable." It is the how and why of this phenomenon, it is the mystery, that Kotler delves deeply into.

And yet there is a more tactile mystery that can be tasted through physical experience, through exertion, through being "in the zone."--surfing, being in animate motion in whatever form. Mythos has its place, emotions are said to be believed to be constantly filtering our reality--meaning quite literally that what we believe may be what we actually see. The question is then begged: What happens to our reality and to a society's reality when belief in the mythological ceases?

While this is heady stuff and the science fascinating, the author makes his words dance; the interplay being tremendously fun to behold.

Don't let the "J" word scare you off

Don't let the "J" word scare you away from this book, or the "surf" word either for that matter. This is a slick and intersting work written by a real smart guy.

The author brings you along on his quest. He's searching for the origin of the "Conductor" lore - the enigmatic chap who controls the weather and the waves and can give a surfer the ride of his life or be the conduit for ending it.

Reading this book is like sitting in an amusement park ride being driven along a path that allows us a peek at Pacific legends, quantum physics, that ol'time religion and psychotropic drug treatments.

I'm a member of a read and release program and can't quite decide if I want to leave this book on a California pier, a roudy fundamentalist church or the local loony bin. But rest assured, anyone who lays claim to this book will find it fascinating. bg

Very interesting perspective that deals with a lot of interesting subjects - like out of body experiences, the basis for belief, great story of a personal quest. Often in the book when he touches on an interesting subject he will back it up with previously written data by another author or research that had been done. It was definitely out of the norm of what I usually read and I enjoyed it so much. A friend recommended it to me and I would like to recommend it to you.
