About the Author
Mark Lassoff 's parents frequently claim that Mark was born to be a programmer. In the mid-eighties when the neighborhood kids were outside playing kickball and throwing snowballs, Mark was hard at work on his Commodore 64 writing games in the BASIC programming language. Computers and programming continued to be a strong interest in college where Mark majored in communication and computer science. Upon completing his college career, Mark worked in the software and web development departments at several large corporations. In 2001, on a whim, while his contemporaries were conquering the dot-com world, Mark accepted a position training programmers in a technical training center in Austin, Texas. It was there he fell in love with teaching programming. Teaching programming has been Mark's passion for the last 10 years. Today Mark is a top technical trainer, traveling the country providing training for software and web developers. Mark's training clients include the Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, Discover Card Services, and Kaiser Permaente. Mark's clients rate his classes 9.81/10, with consistent perfect scores on participant evaluations. In addition to traditional classroom training, Mark is a sought after video trainer and host. He has authored and hosted video courses for several publishers, including his own company LearnToProgram.tv, Inc.. Just what I needed as alternative to Flash

I had created an MP3 player in Flash several years ago for some clients that are musicians. I have long since abandoned programming in Flash but have kept the MP3 Players on the clients' sites since that is all I had. Been wanting to switch them to HTML5 for quite some time, but didn't really know what I could do to make them as functional as the Flash version.

This book had all of the solutions I needed, and lots of HTML5 info. Fantastic!

Well written, easy to follow

Very useful book especially if you're learning HTML5. Well explained and easy to follow, and the code examples are there in great detail. Mark explains the steps in detail and this is a great way to learn HTML5 as well as have an audio player on your web page.

Great beginner book!

Don't let the size of this book fool you, the content is extremely well written and while providing the very basics of programming in HTML5 it also highlights many tips and tricks all throughout the book. As the title states, the book is a step by step guide for creating the MP3 player from scratch in HTML5 and JavaScript. It covers a lot of material from page to page but presents it in a very easy to read manner. I actually read the book from front to back first and then I went through and actually wrote the code and skimmed back through the book. The entire process took less than a couple of hours, if that. I am a pretty experienced programmer so much of the information was not new to me but I really liked the way the author has written this and I actually learned a few tips around the HTML5 player object. If you are trying to learn HTML5 I think books like this are excellent. Any book that is written in the "by example" format is a great way to learn programming.

Malcolm K. Sparrow is Professor of the Practice of Public Management at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is Faculty Chair of the School's Executive Programs on regulation and enforcement, corruption control, policing, and counter-terrorism.

Excellent Resource for Compliance Professionals

Excellent resource for changing the regulatory enforcement paradigm from mindless zero defects to risk-based analysis of what enforcement should be about - reducing the risk the regulations were intended to address. Too many people working in the compliance field walk in with the perspective that they are policing - when instead the focus should be on effective reduction of risk - by addressing the leading indicators of risk. After 30 years in the regulatory compliance field, this is still my "go-to" for helping new professionals gain a useful, pro-active perspective on what their role should be, as well as how best to accomplish legitimate compliance goals....

A really good book!

I am hooked on this Real Love Series, for most of us have been fooled by love...probably more than once. In this second book, Second Chances, Drake is so distraught when it seems that his best friend, Levi has stolen the affections of his wife, Sasha that rather than stay and fight for her, he leaves his home in Devin's Cay and takes refuge at his brother's home in Tampa for six long months ... and he's a newlywed! When his mentor and father figure dies,he returns to Devin's Cay to pay his respects. He also hopes to win back his wife's heart, but instead, Drake's life goes into a tailspin and then he hits rock bottom. Meanwhile, the church position he was being groomed for by his mentor is being snatched out from under him in a most conniving, unconventional way. With false accusations being hurled his way, how will he ever get his wife to believe he's innocent? Will he ever get a second chance at love?

When Author Fowler creates a love story, he does it like no other. This book has believable characters, and an unbelievable, jaw-dropping twist toward the end. You don't want to miss out on this series.

You reap what you sow!!!

Drake was quick to judge Sasha and was unforgiving and cruel. When he found himself in a similar situation, he was the one seeking forgiveness. This was a great book and I enjoyed reading it on a snowy day in Michigan. I wonder what Drake will say or do to Levi? Levi is still coveting Sasha. Well, I have to wait for book 3 to find out. Another excellent book by Mr. Fowler.

I really enjoyed witnessing the ups & downs of love and all the drama that surrounded the loss of trust in a brand new marriage. That Drake is an aspiring Minister added a refreshing angle to this love story. The suspense at the end is expertly weaved into a result that leaves you wanting more....HH.Fowler continues to peek my interest in learning more about Devin's Cay.

Couldn't be better!! Seriously!!

Great read, with pulse pounding action, and nail biting suspense. An awesome thing about this story is the time period it takes place: 2000. The beginning of the War on Terror. Lion of God has CIA, Mossad, Black Ops, and deniable Israeli Assassins, or Kidons. We get a glimpse of what goes on in the world of intelligence agencies and how "allies" help eachother while covertly perusing their own agenda.
The main character, the Kidon - Ariel, is fascinating and Mr. England gives us just enough about his background to leave us wanting more and form our own idea of what he's gone through. Muslim extremists are a very clear and present danger to the world and NOBODY has a better grip and understanding on this subject than Stephen England. Just wait until you read this... Then you will understand what I'm saying.
Great job Mr. England and my only complaint is that I have to wait for the next episode.

Great spy-genre read that you'll burn through in an evening

This is a splendid little novella. As with Mr. England's other works, the suspense is taught, the intrigue is compelling and the brief glimpse into global espionage is delivered with the flair of a true expert. Of particular note is the setting: the year 2000, during the events that led directly to the War on Terror—this was a year that changed the world forever.

I very much look forward to future installments in the series and highly recommend this novella to anyone interested in a gritty, realistic depiction of the shadowy world of counter-terrorism.

Vivid snapshot of the intifada

As is typical of a piece written by Stephen England, this work was poignant, immaculately researched, and riveting. "Lion of God" is a perfectly captured snapshot of a moment of extreme tension in the Middle East, putting the reader at ground level during the Palestinian Intifada of 2000. The author skillfully weaves a tale of stark brutality, international relations balanced on a razor's edge, and cold vengeance delivered with pinpoint precision. England showcases his intimate understanding of spycraft, espionage, and the sordid inner workings of international politics, creating a complex literary world that does justice to the real thing.

Patrick Lee holds the John N. and Jamie D. McAleer Chair of Bioethics and is the director of the Institute of Bioethics at Franciscan University Steubenville. This book addresses the moral question of abortion: is it ever morally right to procure an abortion, to help procure one, or to perform one? Lee's method is strictly philosophical, with special attention given to authors in the broadly analytical school of thought. He contends that what is killed in abortion is indeed an individual human being, that this being is not different from us in any morally significant way, and that, as a result, it can rightly be called a "person." Attempts to argue otherwise are carefully presented and criticized, as are other attempts morally to justify abortion. Lee first sets out the prima facie case against abortion: abortion is wrong because it is the intentional killing of human persons. Then, chapter by chapter, he examines and refutes the main challenges to that argument. In Chapter One he analyzes the argument that abortion is (sometimes) right because what is conceived does not become a person until after birth. Chapter Two examines and criticizes the position that some early abortions are morally right because during gestation the embryo or fetus only gradually acquires moral worth. Chapter Three focuses on the position that in the early stages of pregnancy the embryo is not a human individual. In Chapter Four, Lee examines and criticizes the position of Judith Jarvis Thomson and Francis Kamm--that abortion is not always intentional killing but is sometimes the case of not providing life support and therefore morally justifiable. Chapter Five presents a critique of the consequentialist or utilitarian argument for abortion. Lee's dispassionate examination of the issues, his use of neutral language, and his fair and objective presentation of opposing views recommend this book to all who are interested in the philosophical and moral question of abortion. It will be especially useful as a textbook for seminary and graduate courses in medical ethics and as a supplementary text in undergraduate courses.

An excellent defense of the pro-life position.

"Abortion and Unborn Human Life" is quite simply one of the best philosophical defenses of the pro-life position. The book is impressive in its clarity, its complete avoidance of emotional rhetoric, and Lee's willingness to address the most sophisticated pro-choice arguments.
Lee's book will be welcomed mainly by those who are interested in the _philosophical_ issues behind the abortion debate. There are no slogans, no sound-bites, no pictures of thumb-sucking foetuses here -- merely calm, rational argumentation. This is a refreshing change, and it is precisely what the abortion debate generally lacks.
As a pro-choicer, I do think Lee's arguments are flawed. His arguments in favour of foetal personhood are particularly tendentious. Nevertheless, the book presents a formidable challenge to the pro-choice position, and interested parties owe it to themselves to read it.

I have read a number of books on the abortion issue (both pro/con), and this is certainly one of the best philosophical defenses of the pro-life position. Be warned: if you're looking for partisan ranting or emotional appeals--i.e. abortion is wrong because liberals are evil people, or because God said so, or because babies are cute--this is not that book. Purely philosophical. Well thought out, well written. Anyone wishing to discuss this issue beyond simple slogans should read this book. Highly recommended.

Excellent Guide to Positional Chess

Analyze Your Chess is an excellent book for the non-master player (it would probably also be helpful to low masters).
First of all, the book is enjoyable. Crouch discusses his games, with an emphasis on games he should have won or should have drawn, but lost or drew. Crouch's style is positional, which is fine, but his repertoire is limited, and this book features many Scandinavian Defenses, an opening I neither play nor face (since I open with 1. d4) but I still found the games instructive. They are thoroughly annotated without the analysis being overly complex, and there are many instructive middlegames and endgames. Honestly, I am not sure if this book will improve my chess, but I found it an enjoyable read, written very candidly. I like this book!

Quirky but good

I like Crouch's books primarily because of the *very* thorough annotations with emphasis on prose explanations. I find that at times the writing seems a bit odd, perhaps partly because Crouch is Brithish and I'm American, but mainly because the books could at times use more careful editing. I could be mistaken but don't recall having this impression of Crouch's "Chess Secrets: Great Attackers", perhaps because that book (or series) was better edited.

Overall I like his books well enough that when they are on a chess subject of interest to me, I lean towards buying because he is the author. The books, including this one, are well-suited for browsing without a board because of plentiful diagrams and the prose descriptions. In "Analyse your chess", Crouch explains his thinking in great detail in his own games -- I find it fascinating as a very personal look at an IM level player's thinking and consideration of his weaknesses, focusing on errors which hinder his progress (and comeback recovering from a stroke and near blindness).

I was disappointed in the lack of a chronological list of games, although there is an index of games by opponent. The introduction and final chapter discussed this aspect of the book and the results extensivelyand I found the statistical approach of these two sections to be boring but others may not.

All three books mentioned have the "Look Inside" feature at Amazon.com. Reader reviews of Modern Chess shed more light on the editing issues I mentioned (one was titled, "Brilliant, but with editing difficulties"). The day I bought Modern Chess I was shopping with my wife and looked forward to stealing a few minutes to examine it while she tried on clothes. I was at first so concerned with a couple of examples that I feared I'd bought a lemon and looked up those Amazon reviews. Happily the book turned out to be a find and a personal favorite, and I will always consider books by Colin Crouch to be of potential interest.
