Great book by a forward looking author. If you don't want to pay for the book read the the system dynamics papers of the author, but if you want the codes and equations you have to buy the book.

About the Author
Matthew Morris has worked with the Oracle database since 1996 when he worked in the RDBMS support team for Oracle Support Services. Employed by Oracle for over eleven years in support and development positions, Matthew was an early adopter of the Oracle Certified Professional program. He was one of the first one hundred Oracle Certified Database Administrators (version 7.3) and was also in the first hundred to become an Oracle Certified Forms Developer. In the years since, he has upgraded his Database Administrator certification for releases 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g, and 12c; become an advanced PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional; added the Expert certifications for Application Express, Oracle SQL, and Oracle SQL Tuning, as well as the Specialist certification for Oracle Linux 6. Matthew is an experienced Database Administrator and PL/SQL developer and has been creating Web applications with Oracle Application Express since the early days of its release. He is currently employed as a Database Engineer with Computer Sciences Corporation developing enterprise applications.

This is an amazing book, if you understand how the exam process works.

I am an OCP since Oracle 8 (around 1998) and a former Oracle Education instructor. I never got less than 85% on the exams (the passing score is around 65%). I've seen all kinds of study materials you can imagine over this15-year period. One thing is for sure: The only book that matters for a certification is one which precisely covers all topics to the real 1z0-060 exam. If you're considering buying this book then you probably are not willing the pay thousands of dollars for the official training and material. If you already are an experienced OCP DBA, I bet you are not so enthusiastic about facing a classroom.

So, here the roadmap is well-known. The guaranteed way to pass the actual exam -- with the least effort and cost -- is by taking the practice test simulator, which you can buy on the Self Test Software site (for $ 99.00). After that, the real exam costs around $250.00. (depending on your country). That's all the money you'll spend, not much of an investment, right ? You must retake the simulated questions until you get a 100% score. Then, chances are you will pass the real exam, since Self Test Software has the policy of giving your money back otherwise (the Test Pass Guarantee). That's because Self Test is the official practice test provider, and the questions are very similar to those on the real exam -- usually the same ones, somewhat shuffled. Their scope and even phrasings are the same. Each Self Test practice question has an explanation section, so you understand each question in depth.

Where does this book come into play ? It gives you a general and to-the-point overview of all the test objectives. I've taken a look at the other 12c OCP DBA upgrade books, but this is the one I like best. The author seems to have had access to the practice or real questions (maybe he took them or bought the Self Test simulator).

What I especially like is the excellent balance between accurate content and concision (which are generally mutually exclusive). The other books you'll find on this site (many of which I know from previous releases) are at least twice as bulky, with no apparent edge. Another plus is that the text is very clear, the author is a fluid writer. Some other materials I've seen are either succint checklists of brain dumps or lenghy and dull books.

Good as a guideline and points you on the right direction for the new features

I read it to the half so far and enjoyed the information and details as a study guide, it does not contain all details you need from every asect or new feature but it points you on the right direction. Overall I liked it exactly as the name says, a study guide to give an overall of the new features and in some of them it gets deeper, and on the others it only gives a breaf explanation. I recommend as a complement, but you should look for more sources and practice to pass the exam I suppose.

At Disney he also served as Head of Special Effects Units for the Disney features Kingdom of the Sun and Tarzan, and was Special Effects Animator on such notable titles as Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, James and the Giant Peach, Hercules and Mulan. He served as Designer and Supervisor for all 2D and 3D visual effects on the television series Silverwing, and Chaotic at Bardel Animation in Vancouver. He has also designed and directed a wide variety of television commercials. Clients include General Motors, CocaCola, Honda, MacDonald's, Gillette, Players Tobacco, Larrouse Dictionaries, and Radio Quebec. For almost three years, he was the Head of animation, and Digital Character animation at the Vancouver Film School. He lectures at animation schools in Canada, Europe and Asia, and has conducted workshops at animation festivals and schools around the world. he is a professional musician and performer as well. Much like the first

Volume II has a lot of the same things that Volume I had. In many cases there is more detail. The first 1/2 of the book deals almost entirely with water--splashes, waves, etc. and the second half has a lot more to do with fire (and smoke). As it turns out, fire and water should be animated in much the same way, so I guess that makes sense. There is a fair amount of repetition between the first and second volumes. My recommendation would be to start with volume II and, if you really like it, get volume I. If you already have Volume I and would like a few more details, then I would recommend volume II. If you already have vol I and for whatever reason, you don't like it much, I wouldn't recommend this as it is more of the same. For those not already familiar with the series, you should know that it is a book of lots and lots of pictures with some good explanations of what is going on. I think this is a great way to do an informative "drawing" book. You should already have some artistic ability and a good eye--what this will teach you is to take those abilities and start animating the everyday things that are so difficult to get to look natural. Recommended if you already can draw and you're just wanting to make your animations look more real.

More practical than Volume 1

If you can only buy one of these books, I would recommend getting this book rather than Volume 1. Both books cover a lot of the same material, but this one has very well-crafted tutorials. If you are attempting to develop your technique in the animation of fire and water (very difficult things to successfully animate) this book will guide you. The best thing is that the tutorials are not software-specific - you can use them with any animation tools you use.

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in animation.

Not bad, but not great

I've had this book for a while now and it's difficult to review on it's own, since technically it is part of a set. And also there really are no books out there specifically on this subject (that I'm aware of) so there's not much to compare it to. First off, if you didn't like the first book, you probably won't like this one. It's very similar and there is some overlapping material. There are some very good aspects to this book, but I have some issues with it: One, literally a third of the book is taken up by animating a splash, and two: I can't help but feel if both books were presented in a slightly more focused fashion it could've all fit into one book. For example in the chapter on fire he goes into a lot of scientific detail on combustion, which from a practical point of view, didn't do me any good and didn't need to be there.

His overall teaching/presentation style is often a little wordy and not as focused as in some other animation books I have. I agree this is complicated stuff, but probably no more so than animation in general. It's just different. Also, there is a LOT of wasted space in the book. Some of the pages have big, clear pictures in it, which is great, but there are many pages where the type only takes up like half of a page because the margins are so far in, and there is some random illustration on the page that doesn't show how to animate anything, it's just for decoration. Feels very padded at times. And lastly, the companion website that is supposed to exist, doesn't. I went to the address it listed and there is nothing there.

If you are really needing in-depth instruction on animating special effects then you'll probably want to pick this up. The fact that there isn't really any competition makes your choice pretty clear. Not what I'd hoped, but certainly has some good info in it.

The 1990s have witnessed a sort of renaissance in cave art, thanks to new discoveries from the south of France. Previously, the oldest examples of human art were thought to have been painted 15,000 years ago. When these three spelunkers-turned-authors happened upon the Chauvet cave (named after one of them), however, they visited an underground art gallery that had been closed for 30,000 years. It's still inaccessible today, except to specialists. But this wonderful book of pictures and text allows virtual tourists to appreciate the creations of our remotest ancestors. This may be primitive art in the literal sense of the term, but it's remarkably sophisticated.

The prehistoric paintings recently discovered in Chauvet Cave are twice as old as the paintings of Lascaux, and show both considerable strength and beauty. The discoverers of Chauvet Cave are well known and respected speleologists who maintained impeccable records while exploring their find. It is they who tell the story of their explorations. In many ways this book is reminiscent of Carter's writings about Tutankhamen's tomb with a similar sense of awe at the millennia that had passed between the fabrication of the work and the modern discovery. The text is good, with a clean, easy-to-read translation by prehistorian Paul G. Bahn, who also provides the foreword. It is the photographs, however, that capture the real power and beauty of these paintings, bringing the humanity of their Stone Age artists close to home. Before there were artists at the famous caves of Lascaux, there were artists at Chauvet and Cosquer--two caves whose paleolithic drawings remained undiscovered until the 1990s. Chauvet, in southeast France, is the most ancient; some of its vivid panels of horses, lions, and rhinoceri (beautifully reproduced here) are as much as 31,000 years old. Cosquer, buried for 20 centuries beneath the Mediterranean, was serendipitously discovered by a diver for whom the cave is named. Some of the Cosquer drawings date back 27,000 years. First Book Published in English an the Cave Discoverer is the Author

This book was the first in English to come out on this amazing cave. The author is the discoverer of the cave: Jean-Marie Chauvet. Because of that, the cave was named for him. He also was in charge of the team responsible for the analysis of the find. Since the book was published in the early days of analyzing the cave, the text on the contents of the cave is not as detailed (or complete) as it might be for a similar book published at a later date. Still, it is one of the best books available on this cave in English. Highly recommended!

The entrance to the Chauvet cave was sealed off in a landslide 23,000 years ago, creating a time capsule from the Upper Paleolithic period (the Ice Age). A time when Europe was covered with huge glaciers, the sea level was hundreds of feet lower than what it is today, the population was only a few thousand people (including Neanderthals), and long extinct animal (like wooly mammoths, cave bears, cave lions, etc.) roamed Europe. The cave is so well preserved that the hundreds of drawings and paintings (made during several periods thousands of years apart) appear as fresh as if they were made only recently.

worth getting

This book is filled with beautiful photographs of the oldest known cave art in the world. Simply flipping through and examining these paintings is an amazing experience. However, the text is a little less than breathtaking, providing little information for even those of us who know very little about cave art. It is little more than a description of how the discoverers felt upon finding this cave. Nonetheless, this book is worth purchasing, if only for the spectacular photos.

Beautiful Photographs of the oldest cave art known.

The Chauvet Cave in Southern France has caused art history to have to be re-written. This brilliantly painted cave- far older than Lascaux and others in the region is exhibited beautifully here in a lush "Coffee Table" book form. These are well reproduced photographs of superb art work. Some of the animals drawn by the ancient artists have multiple legs- suggesting motion. Also surprising is the attempt at a realistic perspective in some of the works. As excellent as the book is in its photographs it is short on explaining the many questions this art brings to mind such as - "What function did this art serve." Perhaps this is for the best since the answers may always remain in the realm of speculation. This book is the only way to see this great art- as the cave will probably never be opened to general public visitation.

If you are new to the DIY CNC machine and interested, but don't know where to start - this is a great book for you. It will help you understand some of the vocabulary and gives a good introduction to each major area you will have to consider when building your own machine. The intent of this book is to provide an overview and is not the book for you if you want an in depth set of plans or schematics.
