About the Author
Michael S. Vigil was born and raised in northern New Mexico where he was nurtured in a bilingual culture. He attended New Mexico State University and earned a degree in criminology, graduating with honors. When he joined the Drug Enforcement Administration he was the youngest in his Special Agent training class. He served in thirteen foreign and domestic posts and rose through the ranks to the highest level of Senior Executive Service. He was responsible for some of the agency's most significant international operations and development of intelligence sharing platforms that are still active today. After 31 years of service he entered the private sector where he engages in law enforcement, intelligence and security matters.

I shouldn't need reminded the author is a great man

I was really excited to get this book on Kindle, as undercover investigations are a fascinating subject to me. The book isn't awful, but please note a lot of those reviews seem to use the same words and tone and you'll notice when reading the book kind of sound a bit like the author.. Just an observation. One reviewer is a close friend and is mentioned in the book as well.
That being said, there are some enjoyable anecdotes found in this book, but it was actually distracting being taken out of the memoire by a forward every three or four pages by a friend of his aggrandizing Vigil to an unnecessary degree. He must have been one hell of an agent, but I was looking for real insight on what being an undercover agent is like and not being told over and over again what a brilliant and brave "warrior" the author is. Every chapter starts with a forward stroking his ego in case you forget between chapters.
For the sake of constructive criticism, instead of telling us over and over again that the author has to be brave and intelligent for his own safety, maybe just establish it once, then offer some real emotions he went through, how it felt to be in a position where a slip up could mean death.
I don't wish to undermine the authors career and work he's done in law enforcement, nor that of his co workers, just that his book leaves a little to be desired. I still give it a solid three stars because there are some neat stories shared, even if the delivery could use some work.

A great and accurate book.

I worked with Mike as partners and can say that he was the best partner a DEA agent could have. His undercover work was the best I ever witnessed during my career with DEA. He always controlled situations with an uncanny expertise and was always a professional. His book is and example of his experiences both domestically and international. His descriptions of his methods and cases he worked is truthful and exacting and I feel any reader will be taken with him during his experiences. I highly recommend this for readers to get an up close experience of the skills he possesses and the dangers of work he performed.
