A FAMED CALVINIST PHILOSOPHER/APOLOGIST ANSWERS "THE PROBLEM OF EVIL"

Gordon Haddon Clark (1902-1985) was an American philosopher and Calvinist theologian, who was chairman of the Philosophy Department at Butler University for 28 years. He wrote many books, such as A Christian View of men and Things (A Treatise Showing that Social Stability Demands a Christian Society), , Thales to Dewey, An Introduction to Christian Philosophy, Religion, Reason and Revelation (Trinity Papers), God's Hammer: The Bible and Its Critics, etc. This booklet is actually chapter 5 of Clark's 'Religion, Reason and Revelation' book.

Clark argues that "Free will was put forward to relieve God of responsibility for sin. But this it does not do... if God merely permits men to be engulfed in sin of their own free wills, the original objections ... are not thereby met. This is what the Arminian fails to notice." (Pg. 17-18) He adds, "free will is not only futile but false. Certainly, if the Bible is the Word of God, free will is false; for the Bible consistently denies free will." (Pg. 19)

He quotes Georgia Harkness's Conflict in religious thought,, "But not many, even of the most rigorous of Calvinists, would now say that if a man gets drunk and shoots his family, it is the will of God that he should do so." But Clark then clearly states, "I wish very frankly and pointedly to assert that if a man gets drunk and shoots his family, it was the will of God that he should do so. The Scriptures leave no room for doubt... that it was God's will for Herod, Pilate, and the Jews to crucify Christ." (Pg. 34-35) He asserts that "Choice and necessity are therefore not incompatible... Choice then may be defined ... as a mental act that consciously initiates and determines a further action... A choice is still a deliberate volition even if it could not have been different." (Pg. 41)

He adds, "God is sovereign. Whatever he does is just, for this very reason: Because he does it. If he punishes a man, the man is justly punished; and hence the man is responsible." (Pg. 46) He states that God "cannot be responsible for the plain reason that there is no power superior to him; no greater being can hold him accountable... The sinner, therefore, and not God, is responsible; the sinner alone is the author of sin." (Pg. 54-55)

While many Christians will disagree with Clark's opinions and reasoning, this book is a very clear statement of his views.

One of the best books on the problem of evil.

One of the best solutions to the Problem of evil. In this book, he shows the inadequacy of the free will defence as a solution to the problem of evil, and presents a reformed explanation of this issue, as well as 4 reasons why God cannot be charged with evil in Calvinism. He correctly deals with the issue of human responsibility and demonstrates why human responsibility is not a product of free will, but a product of God's sovereignty and human knowledge of God's commandments. The book is very concise, yet has one of the best answers to the problem of evil. Clark demonstrates why only Calvinism can provide an answer to the problem of evil.

The most common proposed solution to the problem of evil is free will. Clark explains why free will is no solution. He then gives a solution that is consistent with the scriptures and consistent logically.

Makes the decision making process easier

Sometimes it can be difficult to find time in the day to get my husband's opinion on certain matters. He enjoys gaming as a hobby and stress relief and I don't want to bother him while he is "in the zone". He also works in a field which is shift work and he can be called upon at any hour to come in if there's an emergency.

I just fill out one page and leave an extra page for my husband on his desk with a post it note attached stating that it would be nice if he could complete the form in X amount of days. After he fills out his page, we get together and share which makes the decision process move a lot faster, with more research into the topic, and is more organized.

The paper is pretty thick and the back of the page is blank. I tested the paper while writing my review going back and forth over the same line a few times. None of my pens (gel and ballpoint), highlighters, or markers bleed through except sharpies.

If you don't have much time in the day or you or your spouse is on shift work it can make things a lot easier, but I don't think it is a necessity. A piece of notebook paper with a pro-con list would probably work just fine. The layout of this pad just makes it easier for my husband which makes my husband less stressed which makes me happy so I think it's worth it.

Funny and reminder of reality

OK, decision making is not for all people. Some just freak out when the simplest of decisions needs to be made "what would you like for dinner?"

This pad puts the thought process on paper. Is this really important? Will this cause a major crisis elsewhere? This really clears the air in a humored way to make the decision process easier. We are using this as a family to help those who freeze at making decisions. I am thrilled with how much easier it is for those who just look at me with the "deer in the headlights" type of look when asked a simple question that requires a decision. We're moving forward! Thanks, Knock Knock for making this fun, funny and simplifying the thought process.

So many pads, so much fun!!

There's a Knock Knock pad for just about any occasion, any need and anyone if - like me - who still opt for paper over electronics even in this digital age. I can't sing the praises of these assorted notepads enough because, while some of them don't appeal to be because of the language or use, the overall product is nothing short of fabulous. Whether you keep it on the fridge for daily use or elsewhere - depending on which one(s) you've got - these notepads are absolutely awesome. I personally have a bunch of them for various needs, ranging from the basic to do through packing lists, and they've never let me down. The colors are vibrant, the paper is excellent quality and all I can say is that I hope they never change their product line except to add more styles!

These are also excellent for anyone who's into the planner "craze" and enjoys customizing their planner/organizer - easy to hole-punch or slip into a pocket and much more fun, durable & useful than the overpriced Filofax inserts.

Very good for later use

My son plays this game and he has built many amazing buildings and statues but he never really knew how to script, I let him take a read through this and only a few days later he made a working real time clock and daylight setting.

This is great for starting children for a world of programming and design and if your child loves video games Roblox is great for mking friends and doing group projects.

The book is good, but has some errors in the code. If it had not been for my previous scripting experience, I would probably not have understood what was wrong with the script. But overall it is good, which earns it a 4/5

I am 11 and have played Roblox for a couple of years. You have gone through a lot of details in that book, although I only read a sample. I really think you did a good job. This shows me more about how to script. I know how to set a timer and make things explode. The sample told me how to set up a game. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.
