Great book; Kindle edition has formatting problems
By Aaron Lahman
NOTE: this is for the Kindle edition of the book.

Well written, informative and also a fun read. Other reviewers have other covered this, so I'll stop here: 5 stars for content.

Be warned if purchasing the Kindle edition that the formatting in the book has problems: margins are way too large in a number of places, the original index isn't hyperlinked properly (basically just a word list), and figure captions are often misplaced. It's legible, but not of professional quality, and certainly not worth the nearly paperback price they're asking for. 2 stars for typesetting.

If you can, buy a physical copy instead.

A Book of Paths
By Amazon Customer
I've been designing games for more than 20 years and I've read a ton of books on the subject.
This one is unique.

Most game design books focus on teaching you how to make a good game, detailing what techniques and processes one must master to understand an audience, to design a product that will satisfy their needs and aspirations, and to work with a team to produce it. "The Art of Game Design" goes beyond that: It teaches you how to become a better designer.

Here's an excerpt from the Deck of Lenses' instructions (it's the deck of cards sold separately that illustrates the 100 design "lenses"):

How to Design a Game
Step 1: Think of an idea for a game (it's easy, it can be anything!)
Step 2: Try it out (no really - try it out - you have to play games to see if they work)
Step 3: Figure out what's wrong with it, and change it so it is better. Then go back to Step 2!

That's what game designers do, over and over again, until they're satisfied with the game or they run out of time or money. However, if there are lots of books out there that explain how to increase the quality of whichever aspect of the game you want to change, it's the first one that so directly and so thoroughly addresses the problem of "figuring out what's wrong" with a game at each iteration.
In the book, Jesse Schell presents one hundred ways of looking at your game in order to figure this out, one hundred lenses. Even if this number seems big, it really isn't, because the book covers every domain touched by design: from the nature of the playing experience itself, to understanding the player, the game mechanisms, interface, story, technology, theme, etc.
For instance, here's the sum-up of a lens taken at random:

Lens #82: The Lens of Inner Contradiction
A good game cannot contain properties that defeat the game's very purpose. To remove those contradictory qualities, ask yourself these questions:
- What is the purpose of my game?
- What is the purpose of each subsystem of my game?
- Is there anything at all in my game that contradicts these purposes?
- If so, how can I change that?

The book doesn't give answers but helps you ask the right questions. I think of this book as the Tao of Game Design, a path toward understanding, each step its own path that can be explored and perfected. The one hundred lenses are one hundred design domains in which a designer can become more proficient. Jesse Schell's knowledge, experience and talent are obvious when he clearly explains how to consider all these questions, why they are important and how they are linked together.
This book makes and helps me think. To me, that's the best things a book about design can do.

Over the Top!!!
By Brad Hutchins
I will keep it simple. Within the first 2 or 3 paragraphs i knew this book was going to be different from all the other game design books I read. And all in a good way. The author nails the definition and true drive of a game designer. This book (as like most other game design books) is applicable to all type of games. Computer Console, RPGs, Miniatures, Card, all of them.

If there is one book you want to read for game design, MAKE IT THIS ONE. It has a companion helper book "The art of game design: A deck of lenses" that is a collection of helper questions to ask yourself while designing a game to make sure it is the best that it can be. I have not read it, but if it is even just half as good as this book, it would be worth it to get that one too.

(Faber Piano Adventures ). Book B of the Fabers' method for the young beginner moves the student into staff-reading. Music notation is explored through stepwise directional reading, pattern recognition, and changing hand positions, all in the context of engaging songs, games and creative exploration at the piano. Maintaining the child-centered philosophy of the series, the "friends at the piano" from the A Books introduce students to the music of two new composer friends Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Classic themes share the stage with contemporary pop and jazz sounds for young ears to absorb and enjoy. The Book B CD presents a vibrant mix of sounds, from boogie to Beethoven. It serves as a listening CD which educates and as an accompaniment CD for play-along.

The Best way to teach piano
By R. J. Christensen
I love this series of piano books! I'm teaching my daughter piano and as an experienced pianist myself I can say I would have loved to learn using the Faber method. They incorporate all the parts of playing the piano--not just learning notes and theory, but also composition, sight-reading, and ear training. The CDs are incredibly well done and all of my kids love listening to them.
I honestly don't think I'd be successful in teaching my own child without this system.

My First Piano
By Valeyan
The book is a wonderful beginners piano book continuation of the A books. It introduces the theory of the piano notes on a scale at a very gentle pace so that the beginner is not overwhelmed. My daughter enjoyes it.

but this made a great start to learning to read music on the grand ...
By Hayley Lewis
My 4 year old is learning a lot from this book and its companion writing book. I heard her tell her teacher that Beethoven was a "great composer" the other day. The CD helps the kids learn the sounds of the music before they learn to play it. We started with the "pre-reading" series of these books, but this made a great start to learning to read music on the grand staff.

Be careful, the CD (and lesson) songs are catchy. I regularly get them stuck in my head!

Presidents' Day, by Anne Rockwell

From the duo who created the classroom Kirkus Reviews called "a charmed place" comes a patriotic primer for picture-book readers.

Today at school we celebrated Presidents' Day by putting on a play. Mrs. Madoff said I could be George Washington because his birthday is the same as mine. Charlie was Abraham Lincoln because he's the tallest kid in our class. Everyone else had very important parts to play, too. At the end of the day we voted for class president, and you'll never guess who won!

hybrid
By W. Mitchell
I bought this book spontaneously thinking it was going to be non-fiction. It turns out that it's hybrid, if you will. It gives facts about presidents through a fictional story. I'm not displeased. Overall I think it's a good introduction about the holiday for young children.

About Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest:
Kaya Abaniah (Kah-yuh Abba-na-yuh) is a boy's name. Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest is a unique story, set in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. In this two-island Caribbean nation, inhabited primarily by people of African and Indian descent, Trinidadian English is the official spoken language, and Standard English is the official written language. However, Kaya speaks authentic Trinidadian Creole, which is similar, but distinct from Tobagonian Creole. Trinbagonians (Trinidadians and Tobagonians) use Creole in spontaneous conversation, while Trinidadian English is often reserved for more formal speech. Various combinations of English, Trinidadian English, and Creole are not uncommon.

About the Author:
Wayne Gerard Trotman is a Trinidadian British writer, blogger, filmmaker, artist, photographer, composer and producer of electronic music. Born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Trotman immigrated to England in 1984, where he lives with his wife and two sons.

"The author takes a medley of science fiction tropes, from aliens and spaceships to telepathy and artificial intelligence and creates an epic, universe-building tale."

Brings Fantasy into Reality
By Cayce Hrivnak
There is so much I can tell you about this book. The bad thing is, though, I would be spoiling it. So I'll sum up everything.

I am not used to books being filled with extensive material on a country or culture, period. These days, authors skim over those important details to engage the reader instead of take the time in their story to teach them new facts about a foreign country you've probably never been too nor thought of visiting. This book taught me a lot about the country and culture in the two island Caribbean nation of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Anyways this is the story about fourteen year old Kaya (Hezekiah) Abaniah who lives with his single mother Josephine. He goes to college which is different considering he is only fourteen but I would assume it is just like high school. At face value, he is an ordinary boy until he starts hearing a voice in his head, guiding him which leads him to saving his crush, Raima Kahn, from drowning. After that, he began to experience sudden changes like telepathy and the ability to have control over animals.

This books keep you drawn in, wanting more and more to the very end. I recommend it for young adults, teenagers, and also adults who are interested in reading something original and new instead of rehashed story lines. This one is fantastic and you will not be disappointed.

Trotman's Talent Lies in His Descriptive Word Choice
By Melissa Reese Etheridge
Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest by Wayne Gerard Trotman delves into several themes of friendship, family, bullying, and wildlife conservation. Kaya Abaniah is a typical fourteen-year-old boy. He and his mother live on the island of Trinidad. Kaya attends a local school where is close friends with Tom and Raima. He has frequent run-ins with a group of bullies. All is as it should be until strange things begin to happen. The strange things occur when Kaya is ill with a fever and hears a man tell him to watch his food and what he eats. Then Kaya can read minds and perform tasks with above normal ability. Kaya, Tom, and Raima encounter danger on a school trip and meet who they believe is Papa Bois, the father of the forest. Kaya learns his own father’s identity and becomes a student of a group of characters from Trinidadian mythology.

Trotman, a native of Trinidad, brings his personal knowledge of Trinidadian culture to the book. The novel explores the animals, food, and religion of the island in great detail. Trotman relies on his experiences to create likeable characters who grow as the plot progresses. The reader learns a great deal about Trinidad, its animals, and food and culture in great detail.

The ideas and themes of the story are very focused and well-developed. The organization is easy to follow. Trotman’s real talent is in descriptive word choice. The story navigates between Standard English and Trinidad Creole. The dialogue moves the plot forward.

The novel is intended for young adults; I recommend high school as there are violence and some suggestion of typical high school flirtations and sexual innuendoes. The Creole dialect and slang do require close reading to understand the characters. I read the book in about five hours. My verdict? Fans of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter will love this original story steeped in tradition and culture.

True Legends
By Amazon Customer
I liked this novel from the start, and for a number of reasons. When I taught summer school in Jamaica for more than ten seasons, I looked everywhere for books such as Kaya Abaniah, and couldn't find very many, if any. The reason? People are generally reluctant to say more than a few words about the old stories told by granny & c. Some think they're quaint, cute or merely aphoristic, good for a couple of laughs. But to find a serious work like Kaya Abaniah, you really had to look far and wide. So here is the bottom line on this excellent book for young readers -- it is the real thing. If you like the idea of Papa Bois, the Father of the Forest and you actually believe such a thing could be true, or perhaps was true, historically, during a time when mythologies were the sacred history of a people, then this novel is for you. It is not a fantasy, nor is it written like one. While you are following the storytline, you may also pick up a lot of useful information about the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. For instance, I have had sorrel wine but I did not know that it was as old as ancient Egypt. Mr. Trotman explains that it comes from hibiscus and is good for "the pressure", as they say in Jamaica. Bob Marley said, "Everything has a season, find its reason." And that's what this excellent novel does -- it tells you the reason behind things. Did you know that the Father of the Forest was yet another incarnation of the Greek god Pan? Maybe you did, but did you know that Pan and the word "panic" are brethren? Makes sense, doesn't it. When magic is explored, not as delirious mayhem, but as a kind of "science", it is so-called black magic. But, I believe, we need more magic of all kinds today, especially the kind Wayne Gerard Trotman offers in this novel of myths and legends that come across as probable and true.

A beautifully illustrated lexicon of the major symbology of the great esoteric traditions

• Includes a new chapter on secret societies and their role in safeguarding and transmitting of esoteric knowledge

• Includes a full-color reproduction of the medieval alchemical masterpiece Splendor Solis

Symbol in the esoteric sense is not to be confused with allegory; symbolic images are the alphabet of the "theory of correspondences" that underlies all the Mystery traditions of the West. This theory recognizes the interdependent relationship of all things and provides, for example, the basis of the belief that the position of the stars in the heavens will influence our thought, emotion, and perception. It also explains how the alchemist’s work with base metals will result in a transformation of his own consciousness.

In The Mystery Traditions James Wasserman offers a full-color lexicon of occult imagery drawn from the Kabbalah and tarot as well as the traditions of magic, alchemy, and astrology, accompanied by commentary on each image’s significance and the wisdom teachings from which it derives. In this new edition he also looks at the pivotal role played by secret societies in safeguarding and transmitting these teachings and presents rarely seen artifacts of these societies. Among the splendid offerings in this collection are all 22 paintings of the medieval alchemical masterpiece Splendor Solis in full color and works by significant artists and esoteric thinkers such as Leonardo da Vinci, Robert Fludd, Austin Osman Spare, Harry Smith, Manly P. Hall, and Raymond Lull. This book provides an excellent introduction to the timeless and hidden dimensions of occult practice. An extensive bibliography of classical occult works also complements this unique collection.

Review
"This is a beautifully illustrated book, and the text matches the illustrations in its honesty and approach. Highly recommended." (Lee Prosser, Ghostvillage.com, May 2006)

"This is a fabulous volume of insightful prose, and images that stir the soul. If you already have the previous edition it is worth taking the time to examine this new edition as well, if you own neither, you will enjoy adding it to your collection." (Mark Stavish, Institute for Hermetic Studies, June 2006)

“This is one of the most visually stunning works I have seen in a very long time. I would have expected a much higher price for the quality, or a much lower quality based on the price. The combination of excellent quality and reasonable price was a very pleasant surprise. If you are interested in symbolic representations of mystical themes, this book belongs in your library. It is a book to be savored and enjoyed on an on-going basis.” (Mike Gleason, Witchgrove, March 2007)

"Within this book, in vivid color, are the sacred colors, shapes and symbols of the Western Mystery Tradition. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the wisdom contained herein is infinite. As a reference book for symbols and sacred art, as a gateway into the Western Mystery Tradition, or simply as a pleasant read, this book is well worth adding to your library. You will turn to it again and again, and walk away pleased each and every time." (Bonnie Cehovet, Angelfire.com, April 2006)

OCCULT STUDIES / HERMETICISM

Symbolic images are the alphabet of the theory of correspondences that underlies all the Mystery traditions of the West. This theory recognizes an implicit interdependence of all things in the universe and the existence of multiple relationships between various aspects of nature’s kaleidoscopic richness. Through the beauty and symmetry shown in the holy art of the alchemist, the magician, and the priestess, we can see the spiritual heritage and operating principles of Western Esotericism.

In The Mystery Traditions James Wasserman offers a full-color lexicon of occult imagery drawn from the Kabbalah and tarot as well as the traditions of magick, alchemy, esoteric sexuality, and astrology, accompanied by commentary on each image’s significance and the wisdom teachings from which it derives. In this revised and expanded edition of Art and Symbols of the Occult he also looks at the pivotal role played by secret societies in safeguarding and transmitting these teachings and presents rarely seen artifacts of such groups. Among the splendid offerings in this collection are all twenty-two paintings of the medieval alchemical masterpiece Splendor Solis in full color and works by significant artists and esoteric thinkers such as Leonardo da Vinci, Robert Fludd, Austin Osman Spare, Harry Smith, Manly P. Hall, and Raymond Lull. This book provides an excellent introduction to the timeless and hidden dimensions of occult practice. An extensive bibliography of classical occult works also complements this unique collection.

I love this book. We keep one copy in the bathroom and one by the coffee table. Gorgeous art and good conversation pieces. James' descriptions are also thought provoking and insightful regarding esoteric studies; however, I would recommend this book on the interesting art alone.

Understanding Reading: A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Reading and Learning To Read, by Frank Smith

Understanding Reading revolutionized reading theory and research when it first appeared in 1971 and it has continued as a leader in the field through successive editions. Smith's aim in the fifth edition of this classic text continues as it was in the first: to shed light on fundamental aspects of the complex human act of reading -- linguistic, physiological, psychological, and social -- and on what is involved in learning to read. This edition critically examines current theories, instructional practices, and controversies, covering a wide range of disciplines but always remaining accessible to students and to classroom teachers.

Because reading should not be regarded as a special kind of activity but rather one that involves far broader aspects of human thought and behavior, an understanding of reading cannot be achieved without consideration of the nature of language and of various operating characteristics of the human brain. Consequently, the first half of this book is devoted to such topics as comprehension, knowledge, language, vision, and memory. A major change in the present edition is that while continuing to accommodate recent developments in research, theory, and the author's own ideas, a new section is introduced at the end of each chapter to outline the more persistent and contentious issues that surround particular topics.

Within cognitive science, two new and contradictory theories related to language learning -- modular theory and connectionism -- have become influential. Both are discussed together with a closer look at other metaphors currently employed in psychological and educational theorizing. This book also highlights the ideological clash between whole language and direct instruction, partly at the expense of linguist Noam Chomsky and behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner, who figured prominently in earlier editions. No other text integrates such a wide range of topics relative to reading, and few other texts are as readable or as "user-friendly" for instructors, students, and practitioners.

The most significant book on reading of this century
By rshook@english.usu.edu
Frank Smith wrote the first edition of this book in 1971. This is the 4th edition, and although he has done some updating, the basic theme is the same. The book covers two problems: How do we make sense of text (read), and how do we learn to read? If you are a fan of phonics either don't read this book or read with an open mind.
