Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elvish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. Stunning Collectors Edition

Having only an old 1994 worn paperback edition of the Lord of the Rings, I wanted to purchase a version that I could read and display for many years to come. I did a ton of research and decided upon this version (ISBN 116-1749849-2513827), illustrated by Alan Lee and published by Harper Collins in June 2014 (I am adding these details because the Amazon.com site does not make it clear what this version is). Please note that this particular printing is NOT available in the US but any Tolkien or LotR devotee should not be deterred (Frodo wouldn't have been!). I must say that this is the finest published one-volume version of the LotR that I have ever laid eyes upon, and is well worth every penny. It includes approximately 50 high-quality color illustrations by Alan Lee, which even for a 30-something like me makes the reading experience exceptional. The front and back covers are made of durable, high-quality cloth (as shown), with a strong and handsome turquoise binding. The pages -- not just the illustrations but the entire book -- are glossy and made of "whiter" paper than you generally find, the margins large, and the typeset easy on the eyes.

For those who care about such things, the printing is based on the 2004 corrected text, with even further corrections. There are updated introductions/forwards by Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull, authors of the authoritative "LOTR Readers Companion," as well as by Douglas A. Anderson, who provides a detailed publication history of the Lord of the Rings. The full appendices are included.

Two-page red and black maps of Middle Earth and of Gondor/Rohan/Mordor adorn the front and back covers, with a map of the Shire before the first chapter. Also present are other essentials such as the Doors of Moria and the Tomb of Balin. The only drawback is that the facsimile pages of the Book of Mazarbul was not included, which I found to be surprising and a bit disappointing Also, the ring inscription and the Gandalf "rune" are printed in black rather than silver and red. Probably the main issue is the clear plastic slipcover, which is barely bigger than the book itself, and it is difficult to slip the book back inside it after taking it out. You are more likely to scuff the corners of the book. That being said, these are far from dealbreakers, and the joy to be received from owning this edition far outweighs these issues.

Very nice set of books for the price. Recommended. Read review and view pics for detail on font for pocket-sized "paperback."

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go but those people who don't have as good of eye sight, because I know some people who tend to get headaches while focusing on small font, this set may not be for you. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

A great edition for the price

Review for The Lord of the Rings.

I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.

Pros:
- The font is big and easy to read.
- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.

Cons:
- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.
- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.

Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

The energy of this book is palpable!

I received Sharon Anne Klingler's latest book, Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force free from Hay House Publishing for review. And to be honest, I assumed that this would be another one of those "how-to" affirmation books filled with rehashed and recycled information. But after scanning the Table of Contents, I was eager to jump right in and start trying out some of the exercises created by the author.

Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force contains so many creative and original ideas that one may need to get a separate notebook in order to keep a log all of the practices and suggestions, along with the accompanying results. I found that this was a good way for me to discover which "trigger words" (a term coined by the author) worked best with my energy.

One of the most powerful exercises in the book involved taking a few commonly used words in our language and then breathing them in to get a feel for their different energies. The chapter titled, "Planning for Success? Make Your Life a Verb," offered up some fantastic ways in which words can be used to keep the practitioner in the present as well as in action. The first section of the appendix in the back of the book provides the reader with a short list of what the author defines as "lifting words," which is pretty self-explanatory. Appendix 2 has information about colors and their word associations. And finally the third appendix lists a handful of alternatives to the affirmation, "Bless you."

Power Words: Igniting Your Life with Lightning Force is a fun and delightful book that does double-duty as an energy booster. I'm so glad I dropped my assumptions and gave it a chance.

Wow! Power Words Makes You See and Use Words in a Whole New Way

This book is so much better than the typical 'positive thinking' books out there. "Power Words" teaches you how to feel word energy and how to truly use words as tools -- not just for communication, but to create new insights, new actions, and new results. I've found that power words can help in so many different kinds of situations. I've used power words to get back on top of old projects, help with stubborn people, make decisions when I'm confused, refocus when I'm distracted, and in so many other ways. The opportunities to use them are unlimited.
I've given this book to a number of my friends, and every one of them has become so excited about the impact that using power words has had -- for running, for tennis, for meditating, and definitely for feeling great even when energy's low. I've started to discover some new power words for myself, too. My friends and I agree that power words are like some kind of new wonder drug that makes you feel fantastic. They're free, and they're always available. (Actually, power words may be more like having a treadmill or home gym. After all, you do have to remember to use them to get their benefits!)
I couldn't recommend this book more. It's unique. And more than that, it's life-altering. I'm resolved to bring power words into my daily life. With them I'm sure my daily life will become an extraordinary life!

It was okay

I don't have much experience with how words can impact your life other than the few daily affirmations I have. This book is written in a very straightforward way and easy to understand, but I had a very hard time staying interested. It contains a lot of good information - but in my opinion, it's not very reader engaging.

I stuck with it though, and finished the book. There were a few practices that I will try out, but in all I didn't really come out with much more than I had going into it. Basically it says that using positive words will attract positive into your life, and so the like with negative words. It gives different suggestions on how people can incorporate positive "power" words into their daily activities and how to eliminate negative words with a positive replacement.

It was a good book, it just felt to me a very long and tedious read. I had to force myself to stay focused, I wish the author had been more engaging in the examples to draw the reader in more.

As you can imagine it is IMPOSSIBLE to get my money's worth from the book and I am very very disappointed.

Every time I have a not so good experience with a new author it is always followed up by a great experience with another new author. This was the case with my introduction to Sydney Lain. I was drawn in, my interests were not only kept but peaked by this new author's style and characterization. When I fall in like with the MCs right away it is such an enjoyable experience that I slow down while reading it, to keep the story going as long as possible. It's an added bonus knowing it is the beginning of a series. I want Roman's brother to find his mate. He seems like a really nice guy, though sometimes quick to jump to erroneous conclusions.

This first book of the Supernatural Society Mates series starts off with a mystery. What exactly happened at the vampire night club? Where do Roman and his brother live? What kind of powers do demons possess? How do demons find their mates? How do other paranormals react to demons? Why is Roman so uptight? What does he do to relax? Why is he on the paranormals' council? My favorite though is Micah. Homeless, helpless, and mute. Tough, sarcastic, and independent. Scared, lonely, and out of options. Stubborn, smart, and psychosomatic.

Paranormals abound: Elves, demons, shifters, and vampires. Unsavory characters also do: Creepy elves, sleazy drug dealers, human menaces, wolf shifters for hire. What happened at the vampire night club that could make Micah loss the ability to talk? Why are wolf shifters out hunting for him? Will his obstinance get him killed? Why won't he let his mate in? Why is he so afraid to trust Roman when all he's been shown is kindness and generosity? Who is Prince Zed? Why does Micah feel he can trust the bartender Jacob? When is running away not a good plan of action?
There's a lot going on in this first book that is left unexplained. Since I am starting this series well into it's creation I can begin the second book right away. Which I plan to do shortly...

Finally, something I haven't read before!! I love the world the author is creating here. Original take on "supes" (as I call them), and in my favorite genre, too!! I'd say I couldn't as for more in a book, but the first book has left me begging for the next one!

Courageous call by innovative scholar and practitioner

Healing Civilization is a courageous call by an innovative scholar and successful practitioner in nurturing human potential. Claudio Naranjo's therapeutic work is celebrated in Europe, Latin America and the USA. This book builds on his earlier works analyzing how human societies suppress individual creativity and potential through their child-rearing and educational practices. Dr. Naranjo points to the pervasive patriarchal structures and mindsets inherited from our distant past - but not inherent in humans. He traces these repressive authoritarian societies and how they overtook earlier matrifocal societies described by Marija Gimbutas and later by Riane Eisler in her The Chalice and the Blade and Sacred Pleasure.

As the feminist movements grew since the 1960s, more research has focused on patriarchal structures and mindsets in religions, academia, corporations, bureaucracies and within families. Both female and male scholars have noted the repression, fear and aggression leading to violence that is engendered by these patriarchal societies which still pervade humanity world wide.

Philosopher-psychologist Dr. Jean Houston provides an insightful Foreword to Claudio Naranjo's book. I welcome this book as a student of the pioneering work in reforming education of Naranjo, Houston, Eisler and Elise Boulding and Daisaku Ikeda. As a fellow workshop-giver with many educational leaders at the famed Esalen Institute in California, I highly recommend this book at a time when our human family worldwide is in need of deep therapy.

I welcome the debate that will be engendered by Healing Civilization, as it may help us devise paths toward development and fostering fully-alive, compassionate, empathetic human beings who can evolve toward the Planetary Citizenship I and the Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda described in our book in 2004.

Dr. Naranjo should take heart that many around the world have taken up the vital task of reforming markets, money-creation, credit-allocation and capitalism itself, from the UN Principles of Responsible Investing (representing $20 trillion of pension fund assets) and the UN Global Compact's 10 Principles of Corporate Citizenship to my own Ethical Markets Media efforts to reform markets and grow the new more ecologically and socially aware "green" companies of the post-fossil fueled Solar Age.

I had to read this book for a law class and it was a complete reality check for me. The book describes the world as it is and how this civilization will always be infected with an unknown disease. The author goes into full detail about great things to make the world a better place. I recommend this book to anyone into politics or law and even teaching because it may just surprise the average teacher.

Sweet, sweet story with two guys that are not what I usually find, but so perfect together. Loved it!

This is my first Cait Forester book, and I really, really enjoyed it. Edgar was... so f'ing sweet. And Cyrus was delicious. I loved how Edgar's character grew and blossomed throughout the book, moving from ... I wouldn't say "weak," more like uncertain about living confidently in his own skin, for understandable reasons ... but from that, to strong ;-) And Cyrus ... omg. Sooooo yummy and supportive and all around just amazing. I loved them. Plus ofc the supah hot smexy times ... squee! Definitely worth the read, and glad I bought it as a keeper so I can read again later.

I really enjoyed reading this book and thought it was a great read about a prince and acommoner. It was well written and a beautiful story. Hopefully there is a sequel to this well written story.
